Background

Stewards of Chianti Classico, Castello di Verrazzano has played an indelible role in Tuscan winemaking and American history. Owners Luigi and Silvia Cappellini pour their passion into the estate, producing traditional, organic wines that deservedly enjoy an incredibly loyal following around the world. A founding member of the Consorzio del Chianti Classico, Verrazzano has made wine since the earliest times. The property occupies the site of former Etruscan and Roman settlements and was home to the explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, who was the first to discover America’s east coast, landing at the bay of New York in the early 16th century.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

Since acquiring the estate, the Cappellini family has replanted Verrazzano’s vineyards, which fan out from the forest limits down to the valley below. They farm organically and have been certified since the 2014 vintage. Located on a hilltop in the Greve, the heart of Chianti Classico, Verrazzano’s 220 acre estate includes 128 acres of vineyards at altitudes between 920 and 1300 feet above sea level, higher than average for Chianti Classico vineyards. Though present in southern parts of the Classico area, limestone is unique to Verrazzano which is in the cooler, northern part of the zone. This singular combination of limestone soil and cooler growing conditions accounts for the wine’s muscularity and finesse. The true lifeblood of the vineyards comes from the surrounding Verrazzano-owned woodland area, which acts as a cocoon for the vines, offering pollution protection and maintaining freshness. In addition, the entire winery is heated by wood from these forests.

Winemaking & Aging

Grapes are harvested by hand at the end of September to mid-October. Fermentation at a controlled temperature with a maximum of 82°F and maceration for 15 days with frequent pumping over and fulling. The wine is aged a minimum of 18 months in French oak barrels and refines in bottle an additional four months prior to release.

Tasting Notes

Ruby red color with purplish reflections. The nose is intense , rich in flavors of red mature fruits such as cherry and blackberry blended with floral notes. The taste is harmonious with great balance; good structure with oak nuances, a fine and sweet tannic component and pleasant hints of red fruits.

The organic Castello di Verrazzano 2020 Chianti Classico represents a vintage with more natural heft and texture due to the scorching hot summer season. The wine is more accessible as a result, with immediate tones of black cherry, campfire ash and spice. I recommend a near to medium-term drinking window for this 150,000-bottle release. - M.L.

The 2020 Chianti Classico is bright, punchy and super-expressive. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, menthol, spice and graphite all build as this sculpted, vibrant Chianti Classico shows off its personality. -A.G.

In the UGA of Montefioralle, this historic castle is an expansive property with 45 hectares of vineyards rising from 250 to 480 metres. An eastern exposure and surrounding woodlands make for a relatively cool microclimate, and the style here is austere, sometimes rustic. 2020 emerges with polished wood, chestnut forest and cherry bark. More rigid than friendly, the palate unfolds with earthy spice. It's not perfectly refined but has character as well as the stuffing and vertical tannins for a solid five to six years of ageing. - M.M
